Founded in 2015, Concerned Dentists of Texas (CDOT) is a group of dentists who seek to preserve the integrity of the individual professional in meeting his or her duty to their patient. A dentist has a primary ethical and legal obligation to their patient above all other interests. For this reason, Texas has a long-standing law requiring a dentist to own a dental practice.
The Texas Dental Board only has jurisdiction over licensed dentists, not unlicensed owners. An unknown number of current practice models may have unlicensed owners, which can put profit over the patient’s best interest. Our primary ethical duty as dentists is and should always be the patient. Remember, as a dentist, you can make a difference. We NEED you!
Taking action now is essential after years gradual erosion and loosening standards within the dental profession, which affected both the professional dental providers and their patients. As professionals and advocates for the industry, we could no longer stomach the stories we were hearing from patients and fellow dental professionals who have been affected by the shifts in standards and lack of oversight in the industry. We were also grieved by reports from our colleagues who were forced into subpar business deals as the only means to pay their student debt incurred from dental school.
The loosening of standards while expanding the definition of professional dental provider and blatant watering down of our opportunities and outcomes in the dental profession needs to stop. The lack of enforcement is harming patients and dentists. We need the help of both professional dental providers and consumers to ensure everyone is getting treatment that upholds Lone Star Standards.
